Getting Started In A Real Estate Career

If you are interested in starting a real estate career, you would first have to figure out what real estate courses are approved in your state of residence. For instance, The Long and Foster Institute of Real Estate course is approved and accepted in the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia and Washington D.C. So, you can enroll yourself in this institute and learn more about real estate law and theory.

Basically, in order to start a real estate career, you need to get a license from the state. Prior to getting the license, you would have to take classes. Most states have 90 hours of classes, but then this varies again based on the rules and regulations of each state. In addition, you can take classes only from real estate schools that are approved by the state.

Once you finish attending the classes, you would have to sit for a test in order to get a license to become a broker or an agent. Once you successfully pass the test, you can apply for the license. This application has to be submitted to the Real Estate Department of the state you are living in.

Some states allow candidates to opt for correspondence classes, while others mandate physical attendance. Therefore, you would need to figure out what is approved in your state before taking the classes. Usually the schools first test the candidates before letting them sit for the state exam. This gives an idea as to how successful the candidates will be.

Once you get your license, you would need to activate it. This can be done by affiliating yourself to a brokerage firm, or working as a referral agent where you are not responsible for fiduciary duties. In case you do not want to activate your license, you can keep it in an inactive state until you are ready to activate it. However, do remember that you might have to re-enroll yourself for classes before you activate your license, but you would not have to sit for the exam again.
