The components of investor relations differ from company to company, but on the whole there are standard components. For instance, a large corporate will have all the information listed down on its website and have a department that solely deals with investor relations.
Any information related to company's stock price and/or earnings made by the company fall under the purview of investor relations. Things like earning forecast, press releases, releases on earnings and revenue, quarterly reports and annual reports all form components of investor relations. Usually there is an investor relations officer within the investor relations department who ensures that this information reaches the stockholders of the company.
In the past, just financial data was given to the stockholder. However, now companies have realized that any step taken has an impact on the profits made by the company. Hence, all information that affects the profits is disclosed to the stockholders. Also, to bring about transparency in the operations of the company, investor relations is a mandatory requirement by the US SEC.
Usually when a person is interested in investing in a company, he or she gets in touch with the investor relations department of the company for more details. The information released by the company helps an investor to make an investment decision prudently.
