Social entrepreneurship is related to social issues. A social entrepreneur takes a social cause in his hands and tries to bring about a change in society by using his entrepreneurial skills. He concentrates on producing social resources, while a business capitalist generally deals with money matters. The main objective of social enterprise is to promote social and ecological aims. |

The phrase social entrepreneurship was first introduced in the 1960s-1970s and became well-known in the 1980s-1990s. Since the 1950s until the 1990s, a British social entrepreneur Michael Young was a chief supporter of social entrepreneurship and was known as the most flourishing social entrepreneur for establishing above 60 social institutes all over the world. He set up a chain of schools for social entrepreneurs. Another social entrepreneur Andrew Mawson established the famous Bromley by Bow Centre in London. He also wrote a book “The Social Entrepreneur: Making Communities Work”. Then in 1985, Judson Bemis and Robert M. Price set up the National Center for Social Entrepreneurs.
Though the terms are somewhat new, social entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurship existed in the past also. The best example of social enterprise in the past is that of Florence Nightingale. She is always remembered for her social work and establishing the first nursing school and developing new nursing methods. Likewise, Robert Owen started the cooperative movement and Vinoba Bhave initiated Land Gift Movement in India. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many famous social entrepreneurs effectively included the public, administrative, and industrial worlds’ encouraging thoughts to be used by many community services in the field of education, health and general well-being of the society.
